Bad SEO and Cheap Tricks
Any "SEO" who uses these methods is cheating you. When your temporary high search engine placement disappears, you can bet your "Bad SEO" will be nowhere to be found. They'll be "promoting" another website for the next victim.
Submission to "Thousands" of Search Engines - Useless. Dangerous. Stupid. This is the least understood aspect of search engine placement and the most prevalent Bad SEO scam. It's 100% Snake Oil - these unethical individuals or companies are preying on the public's lack of knowledge about search engine placement. In reality, there's fewer than 100 useful search engines worldwide, and only about 10 search engines worth targeting. The only thing you'll get of out this kind of "search engine" submission is an Inbox full of spam. Your website will only be listed on thousands of link farms - junk pages of unrelated links that no searcher will ever see. Real search engines filter out these pages, and actively penalize or ban websites that participate in them.
Repetitive Search Engine Submission - Not quite as dangerous as the last scheme, but definitely useless. If your website didn't get in (or stay in) the search engine index, repetitive search engine submission won't help - something is likely "wrong" with your site. "Keywords in the Address Bar" - This is Absolute Crap. What these hucksters fail to tell you is a special piece of software must be installed. And maybe .001 percent of the online public has it. Basically, it requires "scumware" programs and operating system cracks designed to intercept a web user's intended destination.
Doorway Pages: Bridge Pages, Jump Pages, Attraction Pages - These pages are not actually part of your site. Their purpose is to obtain multiple listings in the search engine results - something the search engines work hard to prevent. Typically, they are loaded with visible and hidden keyword spam.
Even if a doorway page happens to rank well, a visitor is not going to be impressed with a page full of nonsense spam. In addition, they are a violation of the search engines Terms of Service. Doorway pages subject your domain to a penalty or exclusion from the index.
Cloaking - Often used in conjunction with doorway pages, cloaking is basically showing the search engine robots one thing (a keyword stuffed page, or even hijacked pages), and showing human visitors another thing (the real page).
Since many search engines cache (pronounced "cash", meaning store or hide away) the pages they index, it's not terribly difficult to confirm that cloaking is in use - just compare the cached page to the current page. If you see something other than a website redesign, like heavy keyword spamming or another site on the cached page, and a "normal" page otherwise, there's a good chance cloaking is in use. If you're cloaking, your domain will eventually suffer a heavy penalty or be blacklisted.
Hidden Text / Hidden Layers - The use of keyword phrases and links that match the background color so visitors don't see it, but the search engines do. Sometimes, the text will be just enough of a different color to avoid automatic detection, or a matching color graphic will be used as the background. Since search engines are getting better at detecting hidden (or near hidden) text, your site is living on borrowed time.
Multiple Domains with Identical Content - Basically a large scale variation of doorway pages. In addition, the extra domains are often used to provide heavy cross-linking to artificially inflate link popularity. Sooner or later, the duplicates will be detected and one or all domains involved will be penalized or banned.
